The British Virgin Islands came to life this summer as Islanders and visitors celebrated years of heritage and culture during the 60th Emancipation Festival, with food and drink fairs, music, parades, street jamming, gospel celebrations and much more.
2014 is a special year for the Islands as the last 60 years of our culture and heritage is celebrated. With this in mind, we kicked off the month of celebrations with a ‘create your own cocktail’ competition, inviting cocktail and food lovers from across the UK to bring the party spirit of the Islands alive in their own homes… and we weren’t disappointed!
The competition was tough, with over 100 impressive entries from aspiring mixologists across the UK. Our team of cocktail tasters spent weeks narrowing the competition down to eleven fabulous cocktails, and between the chosen eleven, the fight for the top prize of a luxury holiday to The BVIs was fierce.
We can now announce that the lucky winner of the #BVIparty Cocktail competition, with the scrumptious ‘Not so Virgin’ is…
And the 10 runners ups are:
Mrs Rita Mistry
Dianne Jane Stanford

This Contest in Now Over, Thank you, everyone!
This is a special year for the Islands as we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Festival. So, we’re kicking off proceedings by inviting cocktail and food lovers from across the UK to create their own BVI inspired rum cocktail and bring the party spirit of the islands alive in their own homes.
Let us know how you celebrate. Are you a straight up Rum connoisseur or do you mix it up with the contents of your fruit bowl? Do you drown your Rum in Coconut or perk it up with Pineapple? However you mix we want to find the finest mixologist out there.
The ten best cocktails will be selected by our first-class team of cocktail tasters, and will win a BVI goody bag! Our grand prize winner will be jetting off for a week in the BVI, staying at Biras Creek Resort and Oil Nut Bay, with return flights from the UK for two. You and your cocktails will also feature here on the website later in the summer.
Aspiring mixologists can submit their recipes by using the #BVIParty hashtag on Twitter any time before midnight on the 15th of August. You must be over 21 years of age to be eligible to win a prize.
The party spirit is central to our island way of life as is sharing a great cocktail with friends and The BVI are proud to claim one of the Caribbean’s most famous cocktails, the Painkiller as our own. This delicious concoction was invented at the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke and is made of premium dark Pusser’s Rum, Cream of Coconut, Pineapple juice and Orange juice, topped with fresh grated Grenadian Nutmeg. The Painkiller is always on offer at The BVI and it’s suspected many more will be enjoyed during the two-week long festivities this July and August!
The BVI is fast gaining a reputation as a haven for food lovers looking for a holiday destination that allows them to indulge in the gastronomic delights of the islands’ fresh produce, quality cuisine, fabulous restaurants and potent rum cocktails.
From delicious barbeques at Foxy’s Bar serving up BBQ chicken, lip-smackingly good ribs and Mahi Mahi, to mouth-watering healthy seafood at Peter Island Resort & Spa, and local dishes including Roti, Peas soup, and the famous Anegada lobster reputed to be the best in the Caribbean, The BVIs fuse Caribbean flair and West Indian influences to produce some of the world’s most exciting cuisine.
While The BVI Emancipation festival traditionally celebrates the abolition of slavery this year it will give us Islanders the chance to showcase the cultural and culinary history of our people resulting in a two week party atmosphere full of fun and amazing food that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
